PYFFL Unified Shines Under the Lights
The Pembroke Youth Flag Football League wrapped up its inaugural PYFFL Unified season on Sunday, October 26th, with a memorable AFC vs. NFC Jamboree under the lights at Mattakeesett Field.
The event marked the culmination of a groundbreaking first season for PYFFL Unified, a program designed to bring athletes with and without intellectual disabilities together on the same field to learn, compete, and celebrate the spirit of inclusion.
Players from both conferences took the field in front of an enthusiastic crowd of families and supporters, showcasing teamwork, sportsmanship, and plenty of smiles.
PYFFL President Marc Bertrand praised the effort and enthusiasm of everyone involved in the program’s debut season. “This has been one of the most meaningful things our league has ever done,” Bertrand said. “Seeing these athletes play together and celebrate every success — that’s what PYFFL is all about.”
PYFFL Unified Director Christina Ripley echoed that gratitude and pride as the season came to a close. “I’m feeling so incredibly thankful for so many people who helped make this season possible,” Ripley said.
Ripley praised the coaches who stepped into what she called “some unknown coaching territory” and “absolutely knocked it out of the park.” She added, “They embraced the spirit of Unified and created an environment where every athlete could shine.”
She also credited the team captains and players for embodying the meaning of the program. “Our captains set such a great example of inclusion,” Ripley said. “They made sure every player had a chance for a big moment, and you could see how much it meant to everyone out there.”
“The partners and athletes built real friendships,” she continued. “Every week, you saw them cheering for each other, celebrating each play, and just having fun together — that’s what Unified is all about.”
Ripley also acknowledged the support from families. “None of this happens without the parents,” she said. “They believed in the program, signed their kids up, and filled the sidelines with so much positive energy all season long.”
As the final whistle sounded, players and coaches gathered for high-fives, hugs, and photos — a fitting close to a season defined by inclusion, effort, and joy. With the success of its inaugural year, PYFFL Unified looks poised to become a lasting part of the local sports community.
